Kodaikanal, popularly called The Princess of Hill Stations, is located at about 120 km away from Madurai. Kodaikanal refers to Gift of Forest in Tamil. The town is situated on a plateau above the upper Palani Hills at a height of 2,133 meters between the Parappar and Gundar Valleys of the Western Ghats. The Kodaikanal Lake, a manmade lake of 5 km circumference, is the centre of attraction here. Some other places of interest in Kodaikanal are Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk, Bear Shola Falls, Green Valley View (earlier called suicide point), Shembaganur Museum of Natural History, Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, Pillar Rocks, Guna caves, Silver Cascade, Dolphin's Nose, Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple and Berijam Lake.
Madurai is well-connected to Kodaikanal by road. The approximate time taken to reach Kodaikanal from Madurai by road is two and a half hours. There are regular bus services that connect both the places, which are run by both the government agencies as well as private operators. While the government run buses are cheaper, the private agency operated tourist buses charge a higher rate to convey one to Kodaikanal from Madurai. Bus journey can be a memorable experience and is generally recommended for single travellers and backpackers.
Though there are trains that connect Madurai with the Kodai Road station (which is the nearest rail head to Kodaikanal), train travel is not a lucrative option as the Kodai road station is located at a distance of about 80 km from Kodaikanal. On reaching Kodai road, one will have to either board a bus or hire a cab to reach Kodaikanal.
Another excellent alternative to travel from Madurai to Kodaikanal is by cab. Though it would be costlier than bus ride, it can save a lot of time and offer a lot of flexibility in schedule. The taxi fare will vary according to the type of vehicle chosen as well as the amenities preferred.
For those who are adventurous even driving to Kodaikanal from Madurai is also a feasible option. Also, for the daring bikers and youngsters, riding a bike from Madurai to Kodaikanal is an exciting option.
