Nielsen: As U.S. Nears Smartphone Majority, It?s A Two-Horse Race Between Android and Apple?s iOS

New numbers out from Nielsen today point to just how close the U.S. is to having more smartphone than feature phone users: the proportion that currently owns a smartphone, as of February 2012, is 49.7 percent, say the analysts, a big leap on the 36 percent who owned smartphones a year ago. What's increasingly clear in that growth is that, at least in the U.S., no other platform is proving to be a contender against Apple and Google's Android. Currently, Android-based smartphones account for 48 percent of all smartphones owned in the U.S., while Apple's different versions of the iPhone account for 32 percent. Both of those shares have grown: in September 2011, Nielsen said that Android's share was 40 percent and Apple's 28 percent.

Catholic Migration Services provides Immigration, Housing, and Employment legal services to low-income residents of Queens and Brooklyn, NY. Our legal services programs are linked to education, organizing, and advocacy efforts aimed to address social justice issues affecting local immigrant communities. We are seeking applications from rising second and third year law students for summer internship positions. Interns will work with our staff of attorneys, counselors, and community organizers in the following areas:

• Immigration: interns will assist clients with the preparation of affirmative filings including family-based petitions, citizenship applications, and renewal of temporary protected status. Interns may also assist attorneys in our representation of individuals facing removal and deportation. Interns will also assist in outreach and advocacy efforts of our organization in relation to immigration reform.

• Housing: interns will assist in our representation of low-income immigrant tenants in eviction proceedings and affirmative litigation on behalf of tenants to promote dignified and affordable housing. Interns will participate in outreach efforts including tenant organizing, community meetings and collaborative events with other non-profit community based organizations.

• Employment: interns will work primarily in CMS?s new Immigrant Wage Rights Project building the collective power of immigrant workers to end wage theft through popular education, legal representation, and organizing.

All three program areas are currently accepting applications for Law Student Summer Interns. Spanish Language ability strongly preferred, but not required. These positions are unpaid, but CMS will help facilitate Law School credit or stipend.

11 state parks temporarily out of the woods

California has struck deals to keep 11 state parks open and more reprieves are in the works, whittling the number of parks that will be closed this summer because of budget cuts, officials said Tuesday.

Private donors, foundations and other government entities have come forward with funding or operating agreements to keep the 11 parks open for one to three years, said Roy Stearns, deputy director of California State Parks.

The agency announced last year that the state's fiscal troubles would force it to shutter 70 of the 278 parks in the system. Most on the closure list are in Northern California and are less visited than parks in the densely populated south.

Of the 11 to remain open, the National Park Service is providing money and staff at three parks that border federal units: Del Norte Coast Redwoods, Samuel P. Taylor and Tomales Bay.

The Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve will remain open under an agreement with the nonprofit Bodie Foundation, which plans to start charging parking fees at the reserve. An anonymous donor is covering the operating costs of the Antelope Valley Indian Museum near Lancaster. And Silicon Valley entrepreneur J. Daniel McCranie is donating most of the $900,000 needed to keep the Bay Area's Henry W. Coe park open for three years.

Other parks spared for now are the Colusa-Sacramento River State Recreation Area, McGrath State Beach, South Yuba River, Jug Handle State Natural Reserve and Plumas-Eureka.

Stearns said his department is in talks with possible sponsors of 24 other parks and has asked for proposals on an additional 11. Still, he added, "We're a long way from saying most will stay open this summer."

Jerry Emory, communications director of the California State Parks Foundation, emphasized that the arrangements were temporary. "We're not considering these parks saved.... The long-term solution is a sustainable public funding source."

The system's operating and maintenance budget has fallen to $110 million for the next fiscal year from $175 million five years ago. Services and staffing have been reduced at all parks, and a budget deal calls for more slashing if Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed tax increases don't go through.

Thieves have struck one park that was already closed, stealing equipment and breaking into the Mitchell Caverns visitors center at the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area in the Mojave Desert.

Booted 'Idol' Erika slams J.Lo's criticism

Although "American Idol" stylist Tommy Hilfiger is an easy scapegoat to blame for the disappointing elimination of Rhode Island DJ Erika Van Pelt on Thursday night?s "American Idol," Van Pelt is very clear that she has no regrets.

In fact, Van Pelt admitted that she is quite daring when it comes to her hair and was considering a change long before her meeting with Hilfiger, mainly because she felt like she was ?drowning in a sea of blondes.?? However, the producers weren?t on board with the idea.

?Every time I asked to change my hair, I wasn?t allowed to because of consistency with the show,? she told reporters during a Friday conference call, adding that producers were afraid it would scare people before they had ?really gotten a chance to know me.?

Van Pelt said that when she finally made the transformation this week -- Hilfiger said to go short, and she took it one step further to go dark -- her family wasn?t surprised in the least. The singer described her hair as ?chameleon,? admitting that her mane has already undergone perms, extensions and various other styles over the years.

?I?m pretty fearless with that stuff,? she said, joking that color schemes do not frighten her in the least -- and she may totally go hot pink, purple, blue, back to blonde, or ?anything I feel.?

Regarding her elimination, Van Pelt said that she was tripped up by a general lack of ?momentum out of the gate.?

?Even though I was progressing every week and coming more out of my shell, I feel regardless of my solid performances, I feel like every time I hit that stage it was one of those things where I didn?t gain enough momentum at the beginning and I sort of ended up lagging behind a little bit in the minds of the voters,? she said.

It was that and conflicting critiques from the judges, not her hair, that contributed to Van Pelt continually showing up in the bottom three, according to the singer.

?First, I wasn?t doing enough, then I was doing too much. Then, not enough, then I was over-singing. I felt I could just never just sing and be myself,? she lamented.

In particular, that Van Pelt disagreed with judge Jennifer Lopez?s critique that she should have moved around more on ?New York State of Mind.?

?For me, I certainly didn?t agree with the critique, mostly because I was singing ?New York State of Mind.? Anyone who?s seen Billy Joel sing this song has seen Billy Joel sit behind a piano the entire time and still sell it, and I thought I sang it to the best of my ability,? she told Idol Worship. ?I was really, really connected to the lyrics. New York holds a special place in my mind. My cousin is a New York firefighter, and with the ties to 9/11 ... I was disappointed when she said that. I felt like she wanted almost a fake performance, so people thought I was singing harder than I actually was, which really didn?t seem correct to me.?

Lopez?s criticism became a sore point for Van Pelt -- which she described as a ?hard pill to swallow.?

?She made several comments starting back at sing for your life that I wasn?t pushing enough,? the singer said. ?I felt there were a lot of comments that contradicted week to week.?

Van Pelt also believes that she and roommate Elise Testone were at a disadvantage because they were the oldest finalists in the competitions, and the boys have an edge because teenage girls vote for the cute guys.

Additionally, Van Pelt believes the judges are suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, because they used season 10?s save on Casey Abrams and as a result, had to lose Pia Toscano.

?I feel like they need to save it for an even crazier elimination,? she said.

Other revelations: Van Pelt has a vocal nodule, which changed her voice from a mezzo soprano to an alto; she still talks to disqualified contestant Jermaine Jones ?on the regular? and he?s ?doing really well?; Jimmy Iovine was her favorite mentor on the show; ?She was planning on performing a Pink song for next week?s theme of ?performing your favorite Idol,? but promises she may do it on the summer tour; She wants to explore musical theatre on Broadway and a freshman album when the tour wraps up.

?I have big plans for myself,? she said.

Look for Van Pelt next week with appearances on the TODAY show and "Anderson Cooper."

Rejected fruit flies use alcohol to cope

Fruit flies that haven't mated recently are more likely to ingest alcohol, according to a recent study.

Chronically sex-deprived fruit flies will take refuge in booze, while just-mated flies are more likely to take a pass on the alcohol, new research suggests.

The alcoholic tendencies of the chronically rejected flies seem to be a result of decreased levels of a brain chemical called neuropeptide F (NPF), which researchers think plays a role in the fly's reward system.

When the fly does something that would be good for it evolutionarily, such as mating or eating food, an internal mechanism increases NPF levels. But NPF also can be turned up by outside factors, including alcohol. (Flies have no trouble finding alcohol, which is created by their favorite food: yeast on rotting fruit.)

"What we discovered was an interplay between internal rewards and external rewards," said study researcher Galit Shohat-Ophir of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm Research Campus, in Virginia. She did the research as a part of the Ulrike Heberlein's lab there.

"There's some kind of system in the brain, which we think NPF is regulating, that represents the level of internal reward. If there is perturbation in the level of NPF in the brain, there are behaviors that will return the levels back to normal," Shohat-Ophir told LiveScience.

Humans have a similar neuropeptide, called neuropeptide Y, in their brains. Researchers studying humans and other mammals have found a link between NPY and reward-related behaviors such as eating (and overeating).

NPY is known to inhibit alcohol consumption, and mutations in NPY have been seen in groups of alcoholics in correlational studies. Researchers have been working with NPY in mammals and NPF in flies to get a better understanding of alcoholism and to possibly design treatments for it.

Fly dates and drinking

To see how sex impacts fly drinking, the researchers placed virgin male flies in a dish with either virgin females or with already-mated females, which unlike the virgins will reject the males.

The male flies were paired up three times a day for four days before they were given the opportunity to booze it up: They were offered regular food and food with 15 percent alcohol. Mated flies drank almost no alcohol, preferring the booze-free food, while rejected flies drank twice their body weight's worth. Virgin males that had never been paired up with a female in the lab were somewhere in the middle: moderate drinkers.

"From the experiments we've done, our hypothesis is that it [alcohol] affects the fly's brain in a way similar to how it affects ours," Shohat-Ophir said. "The alcohol increases their NPF levels."

Modulating NPF

After sex a male fly's NPF levels were high (their intrinsic reward for mating), so they didn't need alcohol to increase their NFP levels. When they failed at courting females, their NPF levels were low and they went in search of outside ways to activate their reward centers, by drinking.

Researchers can test in the lab how much of a reward the flies find alcohol by pairing it with a smell and seeing whether the flies remember it. When the experiment is run on a fly with normal NPF levels, the fly will hold onto this rewarding memory of the alcohol. But if conducted on a fly with heightened levels of NPF, the alcohol will no longer be perceived as rewarding.

"This explains why mated flies in our system, which we think have higher NPF, don't consume alcohol," Shohat-Ophir said.

The study was published today (March 15) in the journal Science.

Researchers building melanoma vaccine to combat skin cancer

Mayo Clinic researchers have trained mouse immune systems to eradicate skin cancer from within, using a genetic combination of human DNA from melanoma cells and a cousin of the rabies virus. The strategy, called cancer immunotherapy, uses a genetically engineered version of the vesicular stomatitis virus to deliver a broad spectrum of genes derived from melanoma cancer cells directly into tumors. In early studies, 60 percent of tumor-burdened mice were cured in fewer than three months and with minimal side effects. Results of the latest study appear this week in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

"We believe that this new technique will help us to identify a whole new set of genes that encode antigens that are important in stimulating the immune system to reject cancer. In particular, we have seen that several proteins need to be expressed together to generate the most effective rejection of the tumors in mice," says Richard Vile, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic researcher in the Department of Molecular Medicine and a coauthor of the study, along with Jose Pulido, M.D., a Mayo Clinic ophthalmologist and ocular oncologist.

Dr. Vile's success with melanoma adds to Mayo Clinic's growing portfolio of experimental cancer vaccines, which includes an active clinical trial of vesicular stomatitis vaccines for liver cancers. Future studies could include similar vaccines for more aggressive cancers, such as lung, brain and pancreatic.

"I do believe we can create vaccines that will knock them off one by one," Dr. Vile says. "By vaccinating against multiple proteins at once, we hope that we will be able to treat both the primary tumor and also protect against recurrence."

The immune system functions on a seek-and-destroy platform and has fine-tuned its capacity to identify viral invaders such as vesicular stomatitis virus. Part of the appeal of building cancer vaccines from the whole spectrum of tumor DNA is that tumors can adapt to the repeated attacks of a healthy immune system and display fewer antigens (or signposts) that the immune system can identify.

Cancers can learn to hide from a normal immune system, but appear unable to escape an immune system trained by the vesicular stomatitis virus with the wide range of DNA used in the library approach.

"Nobody knows how many antigens the immune system can really see on tumor cells," says Dr. Vile. "By expressing all of these proteins in highly immunogenic viruses, we increased their visibility to the immune system. The immune system now thinks it is being invaded by the viruses, which are expressing cancer-related antigens that should be eliminated."

Much immunotherapy research has slowed because of researchers' inability to isolate a sufficiently diverse collection of antigens in tumor cells. Tumors in these scenarios are able to mutate and reestablish themselves in spite of the body's immune system.

The study was a Mayo collaboration with professors Alan Melcher and Peter Selby at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Leeds, U.K. They were also co-authors.

Discovering One?s Destiny Through Nonaction

?What?s my destiny?? is a question generally pondered in one?s youth. Buddhism calls it Right Livelihood. It used to be the case that one worked hard supporting oneself with a job one didn?t like, in order to find a job one did. In the modern ?accordion family? with its ?boomerang kids,? the kids often return home and ponder their destiny from the basement couch.

The titular Jeff of ?Jeff, Who Lives at Home? (Jason Segel) is a 30-year-old uber-slacker who ponders his destiny on a regular basis. He can?t hold a job due to the fact that he obsessively views every random occurrence in his life as a sign ultimately meant to reveal a unifying meaning.

Jeff?s a curious young man who rows his boat gently down the stream?an attitude toward life known in Chinese as ?wuwei,? or nonaction. The thing of it is, wuwei as a concept isn?t boring per se. ?Jeff, Who Lives at Home? is full of examples of wuwei in action, but misses the boat on being entertaining for about seven-eighths of the movie.

Nagged by his fed-up mom (Susan Sarandon) to pick up some wood glue from the store, he gets ready to leave the house. But first he gets a wrong-number phone call from someone asking for Kevin.

It?s very mysterious. What could it mean? He must look into it. He sees a Kevin on the bus. It has to be a sign. He must now follow this Kevin. He follows Kevin into a bad neighborhood, gets into a pickup basketball game, and winds up getting punched and mugged by Kevin. This was clearly not the true meaning of the sign of Kevin.

But, not to worry?later he sees a ?Kevin Kandy? truck. He runs after it and jumps on the back of it. Go with the flow. You get the idea.

The second storyline is about Jeff?s brother (Ed Helms), a blowhard cad who buys a Porsche without asking his wife?s permission, immediately wraps it around a tree while showing off, and then wonders later why he discovers his wife sneaking into a motel with a male office colleague.

Their mom also has her own separate storyline, which is equally vacuous?vacuous because this is supposed to be a comedy.

What a mess. But out of the chaos emerges order, and Jeff?s belief in a cosmic order is borne out in the end. We are rewarded with an insight into the method in the madness.

The acting is fine?this is, after all, Susan Sarandon we?re talking about here, but the humor is thin and predictable, and there?s little tension in the scenes of Jeff?s meandering misadventures in nonaction.

?Jeff? is much like the recent film ?Thin Ice,? which drones on in low tension for the majority of the film, only to reach a too-little-too-late dramatic payoff toward the end.

Then again, wuwei is an interesting concept, and the idea of pursuing it to such an extreme is an interesting take on life. Perhaps one could view the film for its lesson, and go in with lowered entertainment expectations.

One could also order a copy of Lao Tzu?s book ?Tao Te Ching.? It?s a fairly quick read. It will explain wuwei without taking you on a low-energy journey through the seedy side of of suburbia.

One of the men deeply involved in the development of Cambodia?s financial system, Dr Ghanty Sam, of the Financial Institute of Cambodia, who is also a board member of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Cambodia, says people should be aware of the downside of investing in any stock exchange, as well as the upside.

When people say they play the stock market, they imply that it?s a game, like gambling at a casino, Ghanty Sam says.

?In gambling, you don?t have the probability you are going to win. The probability is shaky.? You are subject to the law of gambling.? In investing, you know the probability of winning or losing because you have the information available to make the right decisions,? he says.

?Information is what makes investing different from gambling.? Our whole training at the Financial Institute of Cambodia is to teach them how to use the information.?

Ghanty Sam says people can use their money according to the level of risk they are willing to take.

As an exercise with his FIC students, using the Yahoo search engine, he went to Apple Inc last August and saw the share price was $182.?

?As of yesterday, Apple?s share price was over $550,? he said.? ?I told them to invest, but they didn?t listen to me.?

I said they would have been millionaires by now.?

On the other side, he showed students that some stocks seemed to disappear.

?Some banking stocks and some European stocks started to fade away because of poor performance.? That is why we focus on letting you use your brain and use your heart.? If you use your heart, be careful, you may make the wrong decision. Be careful if you are listening to advice of somebody.? Try to use your brain and get some information.?

Ghanty Sam explained the basics of what makes a good company.

?Let?s take The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA).? ?You will see the prospectus and you can use your common sense.? Who is guiding this company? What is this company doing? ?

?Whether in good or bad situations, people need to drink water every day.? PP is almost saturated with the water system.? There may be some room for expansion. We look at the possibility, the projection, the forecast, to see whether there?s a prospect of making money or not.?

Ghanty Sam cautions his students not to put all their eggs in one basket.

?I?m looking at the possibil-ity of diversification.? Suppose we are looking at Singapore or Malaysia. We can buy companies from different industries, from different regions and we try to diversity. In Cambodia, you cannot diversify right now; you will only have the water company.?

Dr. Ghanty says a good broker will advise you to diversify perhaps into a bond market, to create more stability, because stocks pay dividends when they make money, but the bonds pay regularly.

?Nobody can forbid you from putting $1 million worth of bonds in Singapore and so on.? You need to understand regional investment. How about stock from Canada, Australia, the USA?? That?s the simple thing we try to explain to our students: international diversification.?

The point people need to know is: you have to define the level of risk and the possibility of losing that money,? Ghanty Sam says.

?You are investing in securities.? How much are you willing to take when that investment happens to go sour?? If I have $100,000 for the education of my son, I would not invest that money in risky investments.? I have to protect that investment.? If I want to invest, stock is a good investment.? You can take the long term in stock.?

Another type of investor is the short-term speculator.

?We are talking about another group that wants quick profits and they don?t care about the long term.

?They use a lot of special strategies.? They care about technical analysis. They also look at the strength of that company. This group is called speculators.? They take a short term view.

?Speculators have to decide if they can afford to lose their hundred thousand, but if they cannot afford to do that, they should stay away from derivatives and speculation and so on. That is the first thing we try to convey. Investment can be profitable or it can lead to the possible loss of your capital.

?In the long term, it creates an upward profit. Short term is up and down, but the trend is upward.?

Dr. Ghanty says studies have been done that indicate if a person invests in a portfolio of blue-chip stocks, the average return over 50 years is 12 per cent. Stock has a premium, more than a bond, and is a very good investment for the long term.?

In an FIC class called Applied Corporate Finance,? Ghanty Sam talks about training students who may be working for securities companies.

?That?s where we need to understand the corporate management side and asset management, to help people to invest. This is the same thing as financial planning for your client.?

Another FIC course teaches about derivatives.

?We teach about derivatives because the broker and the dealers will have the clients for it,? Ghanty Sam says.

?Derivatives have two uses:?? with speculating, we try to train our students to understand that.? They may be future investors in Cambodia or become the staff of an investment company.?
